Weather, Wind and Tent Anchoring
Toronto weather can turn quickly, especially in spring and early fall. Our frame tents keep guests out of the sun and rain, and because there are no centre poles, the full floor stays usable when everyone crowds in during a shower.
How tents are anchored
Every tent has to be secured to the ground. On grass, the tent is staked. On driveways, patios, parking lots, and other hard surfaces where stakes cannot go in, it is held down with weights instead. Tell us what surface your tent will sit on when you book, so our crew arrives with the right anchoring.
Check for underground lines before staking
Before anything is staked into a lawn or park, have buried gas, hydro, and cable lines marked through Ontario One Call. Locate requests are free, but book them at least five business days before your event.
Storms, wind, and heaters
- If thunderstorms or strong winds are forecast, move guests out from under the tent until the weather passes. A tent is shelter from sun and rain, not from lightning or high wind.
- For cool evenings in April, May, September, and October, use only heaters rated for tent use and keep them well away from the fabric.
- Never use open flames, candles, or barbecues under the tent.
Do You Need a Permit for a Tent in Toronto?
Backyards and private property
Under the Ontario Building Code, a tent or group of tents larger than 60 square metres (about 645 square feet) in total generally needs a building permit. Smaller tents are exempt only when they meet conditions such as distance from buildings and property lines.
- A 10′ x 10′, 10′ x 20′, or 20′ x 20′ on its own sits well under the limit.
- A 20′ x 30′ (600 sq ft) is just under it, but adding a second tent can push you over, because the limit counts the total area of all tents together.
- A 20′ x 40′ (800 sq ft) is over the limit, so plan for a permit.
Tents in City of Toronto parks
Setting up a tent in a Toronto park requires a special event permit from Parks and Recreation. The City asks for proof that tent stakes will not cross underground utility lines, a certificate of insurance, and a separate building permit for any structure over 646 square feet. Apply at least eight weeks before your event date.
